Traveling With Pets

Traveling with a pet needs its own plan alongside your tickets and accommodation. Start with three separate checks: the destination’s entry rules, the transport provider’s rules and the place where you will stay. A booking described as pet-friendly does not settle the other two.

Check requirements before booking

For travel from the United States to another country, USDA APHIS advises contacting a USDA-accredited veterinarian as soon as you decide to travel. Requirements depend on the animal and destination. Use APHIS’s destination information and the destination’s official authorities rather than a social post or an old travel checklist.

Ask your veterinarian to help you build a timeline for the documents and appointments that apply to your trip. APHIS explains that health certificates can have a limited validity period and may need endorsement. Plan the return journey separately; meeting the outward requirements does not automatically meet the rules for coming home.

Questions for your airline or transport provider

  • Is your animal accepted on the exact route and each connecting service?
  • Does the booking require a separate pet reservation?
  • Which carrier dimensions and travel arrangements apply?
  • What documents must you show, and when?
  • What happens to the pet booking if the service changes?

Confirm answers directly with the operator and save them with your itinerary. If several airlines operate different legs, check each one. Leave enough time to resolve a mismatch before purchasing tickets or committing to a nonrefundable stay.

Questions for accommodation

Check the property’s own pet policy, including any size restrictions, number of animals, fees, designated rooms and unattended-pet rules. Ask where you can take your pet and which spaces are restricted. Keep the written confirmation so your arrival does not depend on a general booking-site label.

Organize a travel folder

Keep the applicable certificates, booking confirmations and operator instructions together. Make a simple schedule that records who handles each step and its deadline. Include copies in the format required by the relevant authority or provider; a photo on your phone may not replace an original document.

Make the itinerary manageable

Build in breaks and allow extra time for check-in. Pack the routine supplies your pet uses at home and discuss individual health or comfort concerns with your veterinarian. Avoid changing several parts of your pet’s routine on departure day. A shorter route and fewer transfers may be easier to manage than an itinerary chosen only for its ticket price.
